People who go to a fine dining restaurant with ocean views need to understand that sitting and only having a cup of coffee, leaving two hours later, and only giving a $1 tip is just WRONG IN SO MANY WAYS!!!
Servers live on tips and not the hourly wage. Those of you who think 15% is a great tip should rethink that 1950’s reasoning. Many people bring a calculator to figure the 15% tip or double the tax. This is a horrible way to reward your server for their work. We servers have to pay/tip the busboys, bartenders who make your drinks, the person who takes out your food, and the cooks. 15% leaves little room for any actual tip for the server. If all of the servers were to find other work due to not making any money being a server you would be forced to eat at home and make your own meals and serve yourself. Please keep this in mind when tipping as we need the money!
When you bring in a coupon, good for you. You have saved some money on your meal. This coupon should have no impact on the amount of the tip. The tip should be a reflection of the service and total bill, not the discounted total. Tipping on the discounted total is wrong. You just got a whole meal for nearly free and are going to cheap out on the tip?!? We deserve way more than that.
Also, those who go out to eat in a big group should NOT ask for separate checks. Tipping is easy with one big bill. Just round your total up and give 20% or more. If you received exceptional service and enjoyed your dining experience, show your gratitude and add to that tip.
If you can’t tip, don’t go out to eat! Next time you are out and have a nice meal, make your servers night by rounding up your tip and adding $5 to that number. You will be thanked and remembered for your generosity, not your being a tight-ass.
